"Head to Children's Hospital. Don't wait until tomorrow morning.
Pack for a long stay." The night shift ER doctor called after
seeing Ben's test results from a blood draw that morning.
Ben was 12 years old. His only obvious symptom was vomiting. Within
16 hours of arriving at the hospital, he was diagnosed with the
potentially fatal auto-immune disease Wegener's Granulomatosis.
Despite being treated by the division heads of nephrology and
rheumatology at Seattle Children's Hospital, the first few years of
treatment it seemed like if anything could go wrong it would. We
toured the hellish valleys of dialysis, surgeries, seizures, and
month after month of chronic nausea/vomiting which stole Ben's
childhood innocence and two years of school. The links on the left
provide details of this experience.
While nothing can ever make up for that, we tried to balance all
that medical drama with some adventures. Ben was able to go on a
"Hunt of a Lifetime." Trips were made to Washington D.C.,
Mount Rushmore, and Yellowstone in addition to his local hunting and
fishing adventures. Drover, Parson Russell terrier and best
friend, came to live with us.
Like many who have taken similar journeys before us, we experienced
incredible blessings and personal growth and recognize that every
day is a great day to be alive. |
